My March-June PhD Check-In
Can I blame anyone but myself for this lapse in updating you all? Absolutely not. It has been a busy time, full of data collection, illness, literary events, and exam invigilation, culminating in a delay wholly resting on me. I am sorry for that, but, oh, do I have an update for you. So, a…

Being an Academic in a Social Media World
I am sure I am not the first to tell you that academia is difficult. It is a jealous and hungry beast, yet it provides minimal opportunities for those wanting to stay long-term. As the research of hundreds of thousands slowly starts churning out publication after publication, I wonder what the lasting impact on the…

A Little About Me, annafromuni
Yesterday was my birthday, hence I didn’t post anything. Today, instead of a review post, I have decided to write a little about myself. Nothing extensive, but something different from my usual discussion content that I think wraps everything up nicely. What do I like? What got me into the field I am in? What…

Changing up annafromuni
My bookstagram and book blog, both named annafromuni, have been going strong for several years now, but 2025 has been one of the toughest years yet for my creativity and time management. With PhD research and readings taking up a lot of my time, not to mention the added stress of intense reading schedules for…

PhD Update: Am I A PhD Candidate?
After months of talking about it, telling you the stages I am at and what plans I have, you may be thinking to yourself ‘Anna, how did your presentation go? Are you now a PhD candidate?’ Well, friends, I can confidently say that yes, I am. My presentation went surprisingly well, even though I read…

Preparing for my Confirmation of Candidature
It’s a very busy time for me with my PhD. I am fast approaching my confirmation of candidature presentation and the amount of work that is going into all the supporting documents and processes has turned my brain into either an academic machine or mush – still waiting to hear back which one it is.…

How Different is Academic Writing to Non-Fiction and Creative Writing?
As I settle into the mid-semester break, knowing it will soon pass through my fingers and I’ll be back on campus, I figure now would be a good time to talk about academic writing. What makes it so different to non-fiction writing? Aren’t both working with facts and teaching the reader something? What about creative…

My Thoughts and Feelings About Returning to University
Returning to university in 2024 feels like a different world to my undergraduate studies and master’s year. It’s more than just the workload being different – more pedantic and tedious in detail, more citations, more researching – and this has drastically reshaped my understanding of university life. Let’s discuss the obvious first – a PhD…
