A Trade of Blood by Robert Jackson Bennett Welcomes Back My Reading Bug
Long-awaited, put-off, and set aside during busy times, Robert Jackson Bennett’s A Trade of Blood has final been read and thoroughly loved from start to finish, as I strongly suspected it would be. This is the third instalment in the Shadow of the Leviathan series, also known as the Ana and Din Mystery series, and…

Is Emperor Mage My Favourite of Tamora Pierce’s Work?
Emperor Mage, third in The Immortals series by Tamora Pierce, changed the pacing and setting of the story in a way that threaded together more political intrigue, conflicts, external influences, and complications than we have seen previously in Wild Magic and Wolf-Speaker. Not only did it provide more narrative interest, entertainment, and complexity, but it…

Reading Adult Fantasy to Bolster My Fantasy Manuscript
In my stunted attempts to re-engage with my fantasy manuscript and turn it into a dark adult fantasy manuscript, I found myself really struggling to connect with the words I wanted to write. It wasn’t quite writer’s block, but definitely adjacent, given my general creative burnout and difficulty picking up a book. After a lovely…

The Long-Awaited Read of Wild Reverence by Rebecca Ross
I loved reading Rebecca Ross’ historical fantasy duology Letters of Enchantment, with Divine Rivals and Ruthless Vows both serving as enjoyable and inspirational reads. The language use, tone and atmosphere, and overall feel of the books were so immersive and beautiful, and I remember them fondly. When I heard that Wild Reverence was being published, I was…

Where Do My Preferences Lie?
This is a good question because I am not so sure I know myself. I have read a lot over the last few years, and I have grown and adapted my reading to what appeals to me more in that moment of life. Things that were once staples have become nostalgic throwbacks, less favoured genres…

Genuine Enemies-to-Lovers in Brigitte Knightley’s The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy
I have seen so many good things about Brigitte Knightley’s The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy on Bookstagram, and more than a few readers have put it as one of their favourites of 2025, so I finally picked it up and gave it a good perusal. Fair warning: there is a lot of…

Absurdly Funny Fantasy in Oliver Darkshire’s Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil
Isabella Nagg and the Pot of Basil by Oliver Darkshire was recommended to me by a new member to my PhD Book Club, and with its description of cosy, witty, hilarious fantasy, I knew I needed to pick it up. I was quite surprised to find out this was only published in 2025, and I…
