Becka Mack’s Unravel Me Sets the Bar for Single Parent Sports Romance

Can this series get any better? I keep thinking the the Playing for Keeps series has hit the glass ceiling because it can’t possibly reach any higher in my recommendation or my enjoyment of the books and the series, but here we are. Unravel Me has proven there is no ceiling and my regard for this series will just keep growing.

Can he leave the past behind to forge the future he’s always wanted? When it comes to dating, Adam Lockwood wouldn’t know luck if it hit him in the face. After a failed relationship and a string of dates gone wrong, the thought of being vulnerable with someone is terrifying—most women only see his fame. But when his dog runs into Rosie Wells, a beautiful woman with a blush as pink as her hair, she doesn’t seem to have a clue who he is, and Adam seizes the opportunity as a chance to finally be himself. Rosie has her hands full as a single mother and fourth-year veterinary student, and she certainly wouldn’t know a hockey player if she ran into one. She doesn’t have time to date, and she’s fiercely protective of her little family. But when a chance encounter leads her to Adam, she knows it’s worth risking her heart. The only problem? Adam is used to wearing a mask—he’s a goalie, after all. And as he holds onto a secret that threatens to unravel him and destroy his new family, they’re both at risk of losing more than ever before.

Look, I love Kai in Caught Up, I really do, but there is a difference between a single father loving his kid and Adam meeting single mother Rosie and her son Connor and Adam falling in love with Connor and treating him like his own son. Let’s not even start on Jaxon falling in love with Mittens and becoming the Hot Cat Dad of the group either. That’s something I can’t handle right now and need to push my feelings off until I start Fall with Me. The relationship built between Adam and Connor is so precious, so loving, and oh so attractive that I honestly found myself wanting to sigh and cry about it several times throughout Unravel Me.

The found family dynamic continues to grow, filling this novel with so many heartwarming moments. One scene along had me clutching my pillow wanting to sob for days because of how much these friends love each other and support each other wholeheartedly. I honestly think Playing for Keeps has The Windy City beat in terms of the found family dynamic, but I love both series so much and will continue to recommend both to the ends of the earth.

The drama of Unravel Me is subtle yet complex, with responsibilities and priorities conflicting with insecurities and wants to make a challenging battleground for Adam and Rosie to traverse. There is more to it, of course, but the fact that the drama feels more domestic and mature makes the meaning of Unravel Me hit harder. I do love some celebrity chaos every once in a while with these sports romances, but the other side of the coin is just as sweet.

Unravel Me is incredible, emotional, and full of moments that will have you kicking your feet. It isn’t without its spice either, so really it is proving to be the perfect balance of sports romance elements. Consider Me and Play With Me set the bar pretty high, but Unravel Me is in a world of its own. I love Adam, but I also love Jaxon so I have a feeling Fall with Me is going to give this one a run for its money as my favourite in the series.
