If you are looking for a sweet, simple, cosy story with magical realism and that feel of foreign literature, feast your eyes on You Yeong-Gwang’s The Rainfall Market. This novel is full of lessons, childhood dreams, and friendships forged with the kindest of hearts. It is such an easy read and one that will bring something special to your busy schedule.
If you could swap your life for a better one, which would you choose? On the outskirts of Rainbow Town, there is an old, abandoned house. They say that if you send a letter detailing your misfortunes there, you could receive a ticket. If you bring this ticket to the house on the first day of the rainy season, you’ll be granted entrance into the mysterious Rainfall Market—where you can choose to completely change your life. No one is more surprised than Serin when she receives a ticket. Lonely and with no real prospects for a future, Serin ventures to the market, determined to create a better life for herself. There, she meets a magical cat companion named Issha and they search through bookstores, perfumeries, and fantastical realms while Serin tries to determine what her perfect life will look like. The catch? Serin only has one week to find her happiness or be doomed to vanish into the market forever. And all the while, a shadow follows quietly behind them…
Serin is a character you cannot help but appreciate, not only for her kindness and care for those she meets, but her beginnings and outlook on life. She thinks her life is empty – full of misfortune and in need of change. It is only through the journey that she learns what her life really means and what she has right under her nose. Kids are often blinded by the true happenings of life, seeing how different they are to their peers rather than what they feel about what and who they have. The Rainfall Market is the perfect story for a pre-teen and teen growing up. It will not only teach them a lot, but open their eyes to the many possibilities and everyday blessings in life.
I really like the simplicity of this novel and now it is well-suited for adults and children alike. We have the same dreams, don’t we? While the story may feel a little juvenile, the deeper meanings and explorations are just as relevant to us adults. It almost feels like a Studio Ghibli movie with an eccentric and diverse range of characters, a journey of the self, and moral teachings to wrap up the story. It is very cute, and something perfect for young readers in my mind.
If you are a fan of A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking or Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop, then you will enjoy The Rainfall Market. While I haven’t read them, you will likely also like The Rainfall Market if you’ve read those cosy fantasy, slice-of-life books with low-stakes and feel good vibes. There are conflicts, tensions, and high-stakes at the end of The Rainfall Market, but overall it is a very chill and easy vibe.
